This temple is one of the most prominent Sikh temples in Delhi, India. Earlier in the food tour I asked our guide Jaidev about the people we saw living in the street. I was concerned that they were so thin. Some adults and children looked like they were literally starving! Our guide explained that no one leaving near a temple should starve as they can be fed by the temple kitchen. Jaidev explained a lot of the temples practise a policy of Langar. This term means the temple has a kitchen staffed by volunteers that will provide a meal. There is no payment for food and all visitors to the temple can partake, regardless of religious beliefs.

Esa es la idea porque la que Jaidev montó hace ya cuatro años India Food Tour, una empresa que ofrece viajes gastronómicos y clases de cocina en Delhi, Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur y Agra. “La comida india es popular fuera del país, pero sólo aquí se encuentra la auténtica”, cuenta el fundador de la empresa. Hoy esta pareja británica ha contratado un tour de cuatro horas en las que no se para de comer. Comer y caminar. O caminar y comer. El orden de los factores no altera al producto. “¿Habéis comido hoy?”. Es la primera pregunta que Jaidev les hace. “Nos dieron buena comida en el avión, pero la verdad es que ahora tenemos hambre”, contesta Darren. Y el tour no puede empezar con mejores intenciones. Primera parada en Shyam Sweet, para probar kachori y samosas. Se pueden parecer a nuestras empanadillas, pero en realidad no tienen nada que ver.
